Psalms, 110

1. [Of David Psalm] Yahweh declared to my Lord, 'Take your seat at my right hand, till I have made your enemies your footstool.'

2. Yahweh will stretch out the sceptre of your power; from Zion you will rule your foes all around you.

3. Royal dignity has been yours from the day of your birth, sacred honour from the womb, from the dawn of your youth.

4. Yahweh has sworn an oath he will never retract, you are a priest for ever of the order of Melchizedek.

5. At your right hand, Lord, he shatters kings when his anger breaks out.

6. He judges nations, heaping up corpses, he breaks heads over the whole wide world.

7. He drinks from a stream as he goes, and therefore he holds his head high.

Psalm 110 is one of the most cited in the New Testament and is a hymn of praise to Christ, presenting him as King and Eternal Priest. The verses selected below are related to the sovereignty and authority of Christ and its role as a priest.

Hebrews 5:6: "As also says in another place: You are eternal priest, according to the order of Melchizedek." This verse quotes Psalm 110:4 And it shows how Christ is the eternal priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 7:17: "For this testifies from him: You are priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." This verse is a repetition of Psalm 110:4, reinforcing the idea that Christ is the eternal priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

1 Corinthians 15:25: "For it should reign until all enemies have been under his feet." This verse refers to Psalm 110:1, which presents Christ as King and shows his sovereignty over all enemies.

Ephesians 1:20-22: "That manifested in Christ, rising him among the dead, and putting him to his right in heaven, above all the principality, and power, and power, and dominion, and of all name which is named, not only in this century, but also in the coming; and subjected all things at his feet, and on all things he constituted him as the head of the Church.
